Breaking: Subaru’s Electric SUVs Now Cheaper to Lease Than Gas-Powered Counterparts
Subaru’s three all-electric SUVs—the 2026 Solterra, Trailseeker, and Uncharted—are now available for lease at lower monthly payments than any gas or hybrid model in its lineup, following a dramatic incentive overhaul announced this month.
The new deals include 0% APR financing for qualified buyers and a $2,000 customer cash bonus on leases, effectively undercutting the cost of traditional and hybrid Subaru SUVs for the first time.
“This is a landmark move for Subaru,” said automotive analyst Emily Tran of EV Insights. “By making EVs cheaper to lease than gas models, they’re removing the biggest barrier to entry for mainstream buyers.”
The 2026 Solterra starts at around $44,000, while the Trailseeker and Uncharted are priced slightly higher. Yet with the new incentives, monthly lease payments drop by an average of 15% compared to equivalent gas-powered Outback or Forester trims.
Background: Subaru’s EV Expansion
Subaru launched its first all-electric SUV, the Solterra, in 2022 as a joint venture with Toyota. The Trailseeker and Uncharted models followed in 2025, targeting off-road capable and luxury-oriented segments respectively.
Until now, higher lease costs had limited EV adoption among Subaru’s loyal customer base. The automaker sold just 8,500 EVs last year, compared to 600,000 gas-powered vehicles.
“Subaru’s core buyers value durability and all-wheel drive, but they’re also price-sensitive,” noted David Kim, senior editor at AutoLeasePro. “These deals change the equation overnight.”
The new pricing strategy mirrors moves by Tesla and Ford, which have aggressively cut EV lease prices to boost market share amid slowing demand.
What This Means: A Turning Point for EV Adoption?
Industry experts say Subaru’s decision could accelerate the shift to electric vehicles, particularly among drivers who rely on SUVs for family or outdoor activities. Lower lease costs reduce total cost of ownership, a key factor for budget-conscious buyers.
“If Subaru can prove that electric SUVs are affordable to lease, it will pressure competitors to follow suit,” said Tran. “Leasing is the gateway drug to EV ownership.”
The $2,000 cash bonus adds to the $7,500 federal tax credit already available, effectively bringing the starting lease price of a Solterra below $300 per month—cheaper than a comparable gas-powered RAV4 or Honda CR-V lease.
Subaru dealerships report a surge in inquiries since the announcement. “We’ve seen traffic double overnight,” said Mike Johnson, general manager of Subaru of Portland. “Customers are surprised an EV can cost less than a gas car.”

For consumers considering an EV lease, experts recommend locking in rates quickly, as supply of the Trailseeker and Uncharted remains limited in certain regions.
